I use the pool type and always have (19 years). A lot cheaper than the ones made for the septic systems which dissolve a lot quicker.
I took the self maintenance class a couple years back so I dont have to pay anyone else to check it a few times a year. This was brought up to the instructor at the home part of the test and in a round about way said it was ok what I have been doing.

I use 3" HTH chlorinating tabs. Usually put 2 in at a time, real no time schedule. Just check occasionally to see if they need replacing.
My neighbor did build me a drip chlorinator (like leanmachine posted) that I am going to try out once I run out of tabs. This one has a type of valve on the bottom that allows you to adjust the drip. We need to inspect our systems soon and will ask him how he likes his so far. I think this is the way to go and doesnt cost but a few dollars in parts.

rjet may have not have had problems with pool chlorinator tabs, but my service guy (with a chemist background) said not to use them as they will eat up your pump. And no, I don't buy my tabs from him.
When I come across $250, I'll be having him put in the bleach drip system. I only need to add tabs once a month, but a gallon of bleach is a lot cheaper in the long run.

Also, you can build a bleach drip system yourself for less than 10 bucks. I will try and get the one my neighbor built me and take a pic of it. Is just PVC and a small drip valve at the bottom.

Here is the drip system my neighbor built me. Guys at one of the local septic companies told him how to do it. Said one drip a minute = approx. 1 gallon a month of bleach. Once I put it in will have to monitor the discharge tank for a while to determine how much bleach is needed.
Is made of 3" pvc with two end caps and a drip sprinkler. Drill hole in one cap and put in drip sprinkler, seal it and the cap and you are good to go after adjusting the drip sprinkler to amount wanted.
Is pretty simple.
