Here at the ranch the rut has been going on real good this past week. Seeing new bucks cruising my tree stand almost every sit. Ive been waiting on a real symetrical 10 with 6"+ brows. He's been seen in the bottom on camera quite a bit. Ive been up here hunting since 11/16/12.
I hadnt had any luck getting close enough to the big 10 during this time, so I figured Id head up to one of our stands on top of the hill, to stick a 13"+ longhorn spike for some meat.
I get settled in 45 minutes before feeder goes off. Feeder spins at 635. Shortly after a big heavy bodied deer jumped in the pen and started eating corn. I can tell its a nice mature deer with quite the head gear on his head. Still too early to shoot or make a good decision on whether this is a shooter buck
He eats corn for 10 minutes or so and by this time I can tell this is a buck I have not seen, and he is definately a shooter deer. He's standing 22 yards. Slightly quartered away. I draw back, and he takes a step left which caused him to quarter away just a tad much.
As he's turned I notice a group of 3 does wandering through the cedars headed to the feeder. They were directly upwind of the buck.
Well, apparently, one or more of those does were in heat, as the buck imediatly caught wind and promptly jumped out of pen and put head down, curled lips, and started chasing the doe. I watched him run her for a good 35 minutes before I lost sight of him.
Thats why they call it huntin!
