    Question about blood trailing?

My wife shot a deer Yesterday afternoon and I took Caz my 8 week old 1/2 ridgeback, 1/2 Lacy puppy I got off TBH. It was a short trail, but I led him along the trail and he was licking blood the whole way. I let him hang out and play with the deer while I field dressed it on the ground. He was all over that thing, thought he was gonna get inside the cavity! Lol! I gave him a few small pieces of liver. Is he too young to be eating raw meat? I just wanted him to get used to seeing dead deer, wasn't really trying to train necessarily? At what age should I start with mock trails? Right now we are working on obedience, and he pretty sharp and eager to please? Any help would be appreciated. I saved some blood and the heart and liver too for future training!

Start training him now. I start mine at 6 weeks. Easy trails are perfect.

You just started training without even realizing it! Timing is good too.

Like just said above you started! Just make sure you do short easy trails. Make them fun for the dog. Save a little bit of the hide as well. Sounds like he is ready to get after it and will be a good tracker.

            Never too young.

I came into the kitchen and saw a shed horn with blood on it the other day.....took me a minute to figure out court had dipped it in some deer blood for the new puppy.

Just another day around here....everybody eats raw meat especially at deer camp

That was great for the pup. Age is perfect for next year. By trhe way, the absolute two best bllood trail dogs i have ever seen were ridge back. My last one was in 93. He became famous in a short time as we recovered a bunch of deer for folks including a couple with broken legs. One day a fellow drove up to my house (driving a propane truck) while i was shooting my bow and asked if the dog was my famous blood trail dog. I told him it was and he said he wanted to buy him. I told him Spike wasnt for sale and he said ,"Everything is forsale. Name your price." Nope! Not this dog! I came home from work the next day and he was gone. Never saw him again.

Dang that sucks. I'm pretty impressed with him so far. He's very smart.

As a reward, I cut up 1/2 the heart into about 4 pieces from every deer Bagley finds.
We have done it so many times that when I'm skinning one she will just lay in the ranger until she sees the heart come out.
As soon as it does, she jumps down and trots over.
Raw meat from my hand to her mouth is her biggest price

I saved the heart and liver. I put the heart in a styrofoam cup. He knocked it over and was trying to tear it up! I took it, but gave him some liver. I didn't know at his age if a lot of raw meat might hurt him?
                        Saved it for training.
