Just got a call from my wife telling me our hot water heater took a dump. Of course, I'm at work and had to leave to go take care of things. I am thankful it's in the garage and not in the ceiling.

Yes you are fortunate that's it's in the garage!
My builder put two 50 gallon water heaters in our attic...I didn't sleep well for 7 yrs knowing they could leak.
Spring of 2011, replaced both with a Rinnai tankless water Hester system...love it -
