hey everyone i shot a coyote and really need some tips on tanning and fleshing i dont know how and i would also know how to soften the hide i am 13 years old and would really like some tips!!! thanks
Cant help you much on the tanning advice other than to keep it in a cool place until it can be skinned and frozen. But congrats on killing the yote. It's a good day when anyone can take one out of the pack!
Congrats on the yote!!
After you skin it make sure you trim as much meat and fat from it as you can. Then wash it real good. Then salt it real good. Let it sit in a cool place with no light for a day. Then wash it real good again and do the salt thing one more time. After that wash it real good again. Make sure you got all of the salt off. Tack it to a board and let it dry. After that dry you will need to rub it on a board to break up the harden fibers. Hard work but worth it when it's done. At least that's how I do it.
Hi li`l brother, if you`re not familiarized with the tanning process you better check youtube videos (how to tan a coyote pelt) explanation along with images will make easier for you to understand what needs to be done, congrats on your song dog!
i highly recommend case skinning , fleshing very good, clean fur in washing machine (when wife or mom's not home) , stretching , then sending to a tannery
Tack the hide very tightly to a piece of plywood after cutting all of the fat and meat off of it. Sea salt it very heavy and leave in the shade. Leave for a few days and then spray it down with hose to remove salt. Re salt the hide and place in the sun. After a few days of hardening in the sun, remove, untack and was the front and back of the hide. You can use leather oil on the skin side to help soften, along with wrinkling it and rubbing it around a piece of wood
