if shooting out of a double bull or similar ground blind with camo mesh netting, you can basically pick and choose which bird your gonna shoot
I dont know the difference between a jake and a big boy. Just wait till they are ready to leave and shoot the biggest one. I watch them on hunting channels and they seem to fan alot is this a spring thing or fall too?

Jakes beards are much shorter than on older birds. And hens have blue heads. Try with the bow first cause it is a great rush. Use the scatter gun on last resort to make sure and get one!

I have been turkey hunting for 16 years, and the first thing i look for is the spurs!!!! I like the BIG spur gobblers. I just throw up my bino's and check out which one has the longest ones (they will be in groups this time of year) and that is the one i go for. Beard is the second thing i look for because beard does not show the age of a beard (a beard will grow 5-6 inches a year regardless, and they can break off easy). As far as hens, sure you could shoot a bearded hen but since the chance of a chick making it to adult hood is something like 1.333%, i leave the hens alone to help with reproduction

yes they respond to calls during the winter, just use a box call and they will come running. Well, its not that easy, but yes they will respond.

Try it with a bow, if you miss...they will more thank likely jump in the air and wonder, "What was that" and you should be able to get a few shots off if you are in a blind.

here's the anotomy ..... aim where the leg/drumstick attaches to the body , just below center of bird

jake ..... short beard 2-3" , darker head

mature goggler, note the long beard, blue/white head, and red carnuckle

At 15 to 20 yards I am confident enough to take a very small target shot with my bow. Aim small miss small right? Yall have been a huge help and Im also looking at youtube videos to help me with the different calls, signs and whats what. It helps but alot of them videos are from other states too. I didnt know if they all have the same habits anywhere and everywhere. It looks like a fun critter to hunt. So I want to go in with as much knowledge as I can get.
