Yesterday I was sitting a blind and had my truck hidden in some tall weeds about 200yds behind me. I was watching a 2.5yr old buck and he ended up passing the stand and walking up on my truck at which point he started stomping and snorting. I giggled to myself as he must have snorted 75 times. That reminded me of the main point of this thread...
A few years ago i let a friend hunt my top secret spot in the DCNF where I had pics of a monster almost daily on a scrape line. He was literally the only deer on camera. I was tagged out and he wasnt seeing anything so I took him over there, showed him how to get in undetected and what wind direction was right. A couple weeks later I dropped by their camp and he said he had hunted it almost every day and hadnt seen anything. Now I was surprised he had hunted there as the wind had been EXACTLY wrong! I NEVER go in there with the wind wrong. I told him he had likely been busted and the spot was ruined.
My friend disagreed. he said the first two times he hunted it he had an old doe snort at him but didnt think he had busted the buck. I asked how he knew it was an "Old doe" and he said because he heard her. I stated my opinion that it was likely the monster buck winding him. My friend (50yrs old and hunted all his life) laughed and said,"BUCKS DONT SNORT!" Now there were about 10 folks around the fire and ALL of them agreed that if you heard a deer snort it was an "Old doe". I was flabbergasted. i have witnessed bucks snorting way too many times in my bow hunting career. A few weeks later I mentioned this to another friend and he said he thought only does snorted too.
It seems there is a preconcieved notion amoung many hunters that only DOES snort! Is this just an East Tx thing?
