Grew up going pheasant hunting in Nebraska. Expect to walk a lot!!! I remember how cold it was and by the time we walked 1st field I was sweating and shedding clothes along the way! Some of the best memories I have! Have fun and good luck!

I've never been to SD, but I guided pheasant hunts for 4 years in college, prepare to walk a ton! Make sure you have some good comfortable boots! I was never a huge fan of pheasant hunting, but it is an adrenaline rush when a big rooster flushes in front of you. On another note, my dad has some business partners that have an outfit in Kimball South Dakota and they ask us up every year, we just haven't been able to workout a week to go, but I know it is some of the best pheasant hunting in the country! Good luck can't wait to see pics!

if your stomping stubble in a drive expect to see birds flush wild enless they are young dumb birds or pen raised! I only hunt ditch chickens in small groups of 3 maybe 4 people in Texas after opening weekend...all the dumb ones are shot out! hunting wild birds they will haul backside when they hear talking and hear truck doors close...basically hunt over. Hunting them in panhandle is not like on tv,can be alot of work but very rewarding. I am not a fan of drives or groups in a 1 section stubble field.texas birds you can do great hunting ditches, fence rows and tail water ponds but you hunt slow and quite...you don't yell there goes one, cause you see one and maybe 10 slipped off. You plug one crossing and if you don't have a good dog but bird is hit and head up going down...bust him agin! If you don't see legs, wings, and head wadded up he may hit ground at dead run! You hunt CRP look for a landmark of high weeds or low spot and work around it...CRP is the desert of hunting with it's expsanse and boring scenery but is a boom to the pheasant population. Shoot a 12 ga. mad and imp cyl if carrying a bouble and carry some 5 shot enles hunt over dogs...aim in front they are long birds and they don't die if you shoot them in tail! Yeah I have chased wild birds and pen birds are nothing like wild birds for sport and reward...good luck.

It's been years, a lot of years, but if things havent changed, a lot of walking through the corn rows. Suddien heart attacks when a rooster busts up under your feet. It's a nice relaxing hunting experience. If your married or have a gf take her along, she'll enjoy it. with or without a gun. Nothing like seeing a multi-colored rooster bust out into the sun. An added benefit is they are really good eating. Cliche ... they taste just like chicken. Actually, they do.

To answer your question as to what to take ... Shotgun and ammo. You'll probably need something to carry your dead brids, your jacket/coat/whatever you call it will do just fine. Be prepared to see some of the largest jack rabbits you have ever seen.

I go to Gregory, SD every year hunting pheasants. Outstanding pheasant hunting in many places around the state. Good luck and have a great time.

I was there Oct.20. I'd shoot #5's. Maybe cold. 3 birds per day limit, You can buy license on line before you get there. 16 of us killed our 48 bird limit in an hour and a half all wild birds.
