There has been a lot of discussion about this year's Heisman and whether Manziel of TAMU is worthy due to him being a RS Freshman, having a couple of losses, etc. Someone made the argument that you have to put together a couple of good seasons to win the Heisman. Someone in another thread mentioned that Colt McCoy deserved one (if not two he said:roll eyes
. Someone replied to that comment that both Vince and Colt were NFL washouts.
That made me think about some winners of the Heisman and where they are now. It also made me think of a few that got hosed out of the Heisman (in my opinion) that they deserved.
I believe that the Heisman should be based on that season's performance and that season alone. It matters not to me what kind of NFL career that Heisman winner has....that has nothing to do with his Heisman-winning collegiate season.
I think the Heisman winner should be the best player in the nation THAT SEASON. His stats should be SICK. His team should be successful to a degree. He should be a "game-changer".
Some thoughts:
Tebow at Florida won it as a Sophomore in his first season as a starter at QB. He was the most deserving of the Heisman that year in my opinion.
Vince Young at Texas got hosed in my opinion and Bush only got the Heisman because he played at USC. Vince was hands down the best player in the nation that season. (I'm an Aggie and it hurts to say that)
Peyton Manning of Tennesseelost out on the Heisman to Charles Woodson if memory serves. One of the greatest QBs of our generation lost his Heisman to a defensive player.
Charlie Ward of Florida State won the Heisman and played several years in the NBA. Deserving of he Heisman yet no NFL success. (Bobby Bowden called him the best athlete he'd ever coached)
Eric Crouch of Nebraska won the Heisman and was a STUD in college, despite being a head case in the NFL.
Gino Torretta of Miami? PLEEEEEEEASE?!?!?!?!?!?
Jason White of OU over Larry Fitzgerald and Eli Manning. White had a HUGE year, but how much of that was a product of the system. Fitzgerald was and is a stud.
Andre Ware of Houston? Product of the Run and Shoot...enough said.
Ron Dayne of Wisconsin won his Heisman simply because that year he happened to break the "career" rushing record, which is a product of several seasons....not that ONE. His season certainly wasn't as spectacular as that of Michael Vick who also had his team in the National Championship game.
So what are some of your thoughts of past winners that shouldn't have? Past finalists that should have won it and didn't? Or some that were snubbed all together and maybe didn't even get an invite to NYC?
