    Crossbow comparison and recommendations

I am looking at buying a crossbow.

I have narrowed down to these 2 based on speed. 375 fps and reviews. I am probably not going to buy from Sportsmans Guide so the links aree just for referance.

Barnett is a well known brand so that is probably the direction I will go.

Does the draw weight factor in other than it being harder to pull back?

Predator all the way. I shot one before I upgraded to the ghost 400. Great cross bow. My dad, brother and buddy all shoot the Predator.

Will consider other Xbows in that price range.

I bought my GF a Ghost 350 earlier in the year. I got the one with the lighted 4x scope. She killed her first deer (8 point) a couple weeks ago and has been stacking the deer up. As I posted in another thread, I got her the one with the crank so she can cock it easily if I'm not with her.

I am currently using a Barnett much like the first pic due to breaking my hand in October. It's a friend's crossbow but I have hunted several times with it and it does shoot pretty sweet. This one has a scope and it took me forever to sight it in. It is loud, cumbersome and not that easy to get used to I will say. Wish I could shoot my bow again. I'll know more after using it this upcoming weekend.

Do you know which model? Noise was the primary concern.

This is my second season with my Horton Ultralite. Its not the quietest bow (due to the weight) but the compact size and super light weight make up for that in my book. Limb silencers and tension spring dampner make a HUGE diff. Draw weight isnt that big of an issue with the ropes. Its hard to tell the diff between a 150 and 175 when you use them. Held alot of crossbows and I hate plastic. This bow feels tight and solid. Metal rail, riser for optics. Trigger is ok. I got mine from Natchez Shooting Supply (smoking deal when I got it with scope for 460... now 549) and it was at my door in 4 days. Every bit of 330 fps. At 30 yds they have no chance of jumping the string anyway.

BTW Nachez has that 375 carbon predator for 629 and comes with a $30 gife cert.

Ordered on a Wednesday and had on my doorstep Monday. Nice guys to order from on phone too. That was my first buy from them and I have gone back.

Before i started shooting vertical bows, I wound up going the crossbow route.

Ive owned one of those crappy Ebay Namkung crossbows, an Excalibur Equinox, a horton summit 150hd, and a Barnett jackal.

Anyhow, I dont know much about SA sports, but theyre probably ok. Of the two, I would suggest the predator.

The Equinox that I had was an absolute beast. I nicknamed it the Hellbitch. It was a 225lb pull, but that was a recurve crossbow mind you. If you didnt have a rope cocker, it would dang near cut your hands cocking it. The lower poundage crossbows are a heck of a lot easier to shoot several times, so its something to keep in mind. I would also think that some of the higher speed Xbows would have more trouble with serving wear.

I know this isnt on your list, but have you considered the Barnett Jackal? I know that speed on some of the higher end crossbows is nice, but with my jackal im pushing around 90 ft lbs of energy. Thats almost as much as I am pushing out of my Monster 6 vertical bow. A lotta guys would call that overkill for whitetail.

I like the jackal a lot, its what I let my dad use since he has a shoulder injury. But given the choice, I would go with something like an Excalibur vortex in that price range. Not having to press a bow to change the string is awfully nice considering how hard Xbows are on serving wear. And maybe its just me, but I cant seem to get my jackal to group anywhere near as tight as I could that Excal.

I have the Barnett Quad 400. You can get one for $350 on sale. It is accurate to at least 40 yards. It is heavy but maybe that adds to stability and accuracy. I've hit everything that I have shot at with great results. Not to say there is not better cross bows, but I'm pleased with this one.

Is the poundage as important as the speed? Both Xbows are rated at 375 but one is 25 lbs more?
