    Need Some Crossbow Recommendations

My brother wants to start hunting with me when we make our trips to Texas. However, being a college ball player, he says he doesn't have the time to get out and practice with a compound so he asked what crossbow he could get that would allow him to hunt with me in TX when we hunt bowhunting only places. Seeing as how we can't use them here (unless it's rifle season) I have no idea.

SO: which crossbow would you recommend for a newbie? He won't hunt a ton with it, but my wife might also use it so it needs to be something anyone can shoot, doesn't have to be top of the line - entry level is good. I want something that will get the job done without breaking the bank. So whatcha got?

    Thanks in advance

Barnett predator is real good if you don't want to go crazy price wise. I know several people that hunt with them.

I would get that vertical one from Hickory Creek. That thread was just going around with all those thumb injuries from those horizontal things.

Wicked Ridge is the inexpensive division of Tepoint crossbows. Great crossbow technology at an affordable price. I own one and love it. Check out the reviews.

Im a fan of Horton myself. Had one for 5 years and never had an issue. When I worked at academy I saw a bunch of Barnett's returned. Most of them were Quad 400's. Some if it had to do with the cable fraying prematurely. Also had a few of the Predators returned as well. Just my experience though. If I bought another one though Ild go with a Wicked Ridge or Horton.

Look into weight. I bought a lighter one for my son and wife. They can be heavy. Mine is the Horton one I believe.

He can learn to shoot a compound bow at an animal 20 yards away. I don't believe anybody is too busy to do that. Maybe not be a champion archer at longer distance, but ethically kill at 20 yards. I don't know anything about 'em other than they're still legally a firearm in CA for hunting and banned by the county parks rules and regulations on our archery club range.

I'm glad you're getting your brother into hunting. Now your challenge is to get him into BOWhunting.

I never reply to comments like this, but of all the different hunting forums I have been on, this is the only one that always has wise crack comments for anyone that doesn't use a compound or traditional bow. Anybody that wants to hunt by any legal means should always be treated the same. Who cares if he chooses a different weapon than you. It's one more hunter in the woods. It's one more person buying an archery tag to help support the sport you love. Posted from Texasbowhunter.com App for Android

You can get a barnett predator for $469 delivered on Ebay right now. It's what I started xbow hunting with. My dad, brother and buddy still use them. I have a barnett ghost 400 now. We have killed many deer with them. Very accurate and fast. Posted from Texasbowhunter.com App for Android
