    Another hard drive question

External this time. I have a LaCie external that I use to backup my system. It will not let me format it. I've tried 3 times and it fails each time. It does show up in disk management as drive M and shows to be healthy. Thoughts? Is it dead?

What's the error message? You might have an application trying to access the drive.

It simply goes to a percentage of format and then says formatting process failed.

since it is an external drive... Hook it up to another PC and try to format it. That should tell you if its the drive or the computer. If it formats, hook it back up to the original and see if you can copy files to and from.

you might want to run chkdsk/disk error check on that drive. See if it needs to mark bad sectors.

I hooked it to my wifes computer and it acts the same way. I don't think I tried to format it there.

Not sure it will give me access to try to chkdsk but will give that a try.
