I wish my old company had heard of the DuPont schedule. We used to do 12's 7 days a week with no days off. You go for a few months of that and your a zombie, especially when the drive to work is an hour.

My dad worked it all my life and provided a good income doing it. Now I'm doing it and providing for my family. I don't know any difference and my kids won't either. I can't work anywhere else for 6 months and make over a 100K doing it.

Wed is swing day, each shift works every other Wed.
                C shift Thursday-Sat 7am-7:30 pm /

                B shift Sun-Tues 7pm-7:30am \

I'm just looking for more options to throw at them when we start meeting on this.
Did they think about paying more, that usually works. I don't work shift work anymore but the best schedule I worked was the "dupont" schedule.

500 to 1700, 6 days a week one week, 5 days then next. We are supposed to be going to 3 shifts next year. I'm thinking about taking the 2200 to 0600 shift...

I used to work 7a-7p on 3 off 3 and worked every holiday known to man. Got tired of it and just quit. Opened my own business and now I have the luxury of working M-F and kind of pick my own hours daily. I won't be working Nov, Dec, or Jan this year. Daddy has to hunt!!

Exactly. Sure you miss some birthdays and holidays. But you also have the opprotunities to spend way more time with them. I get more time off than a 9-5 guy does and I may work a few holidays a year, but I'm home each day. It's a great thing as far as I'm concerned.

I've been 4 on 4 off for 17 years now.
                          I like it plenty.
I just wrapped up a 2 month straight days project and only reminded myself why 4/4 is so much better.
Even my wife and son weren't liking the days job. Two days off on the weekend Just felt like no time off .

Check with some PDs or hospitals staff. The switching from days to nights and back isn't good for you, health wise. 12 hour shifts are dangerous in that fatigue sets in after 8 to 10 hours and most people aren't able to adjust and be alert that long (speaking from a LEO experience). Add to that the switching from days and nights too quickly just adds to the problem.

Apparently I work the DuPont schedule also (didn't realize that's what it was called). I really like it. As a 24 year old guy, it gives me tons of time off to do what I want and typically nights and weekends aren't too hectic, so in a given month, you may end up with only 5 bad days. You do miss several holidays a year and events and things on weekends, however the holiday pay makes up for it and if the events are important enough, well, that's why you get days off. After being on shift work 2 years, our department started a 7 week, M-F regular schedule to rotate one of us out at a time for field training and personally, I really didn't like it. When you get used to having 3-4 days off to get things done, cutting it down to only 2 days really is a disappointment to me.

I never thought I'd enjoy shift work, but I'm used to it and really enjoy it right now.
