    windows 8

Anyone upgrade yet? I've been running it on my slate since the first preview. Downloading the official release now. I need to backup my hard drive but hope to have it installed on the slate this weekend or early next week. Will probably put it on my laptop after I get the slate up and running.

I refuse to go to windows 8. I don't like how it is laid out and talked to several it guys and they say it is a major learning curve.

I wasn't impressed when I downloaded it on a second HD. There is a learning curve for sure.

Learning curve? Just click on the desktop tile and you have win7 enhanced. I've been using it for over 6 months in ctp or release candidate mode.

I bought a new laptop yesturday with windows 8. I thought I was going to hate it but less than 24 hours later it is ok. Windows 8 was built for a tablet or a touchscreen. You can add all kids of apps to it, not sure why you would want to add apps to a computer since the internet is one click away. ONe click of a buttom also puts you back on a normal home screen.

The only draw back so far is that I have not figured out how to turn the darn computer off, there is no start buttom.

select the settings charm, from there you should see the power "button" and it will let you turn it off.

finally getting around to getting the slate updated. Going from Windows 8 Release Preview Evaluation copy to the official Windows 8 Professional 64 bit release version.

Took a little while to download to my laptop, create a boot USB drive, now clearing 31GB off the slate so I can start with a fresh install. I was in/out of house today with kids soccer game, a b-day party, cooking dinner, etc. so I'm just now really sitting down to get it done. Hopefully this goes smooth! I'm almost out of Jack Daniels.

After hunting tomorrow, I think I'll back up my laptop, wipe it clean and go with a new install of Professional on it as well.

As a software tech support engineer I would never recommend upgrading to a new OS on any machine that is running software you use to make a living without checking with them for compatibility. I've seen people upgrade and it cause them to come to a standstill. Software companies can take months to get compatible after a OS releases.

MSFT has a good compatibility checker that will tell you what will/won't work. I've had Win8 since early in the year and like it. I first installed the CTP then the Release Candidate. Now just upgrading to the professional release version. BTW - people being hesitant is why MSFT had to release something like Win8. It's part OS for PC, tablet, phone, and xbox. They need to hold the PC user's hands who may be reluctant to upgrade. Their desktop is really just Win7 enhanced with their "modern UX" as the start page. The support for old technologies is what is killing MSFT. Apple & Google don't have that issue yet. They can continue to innovate and not worry about the small percentage on older technologies where Microsoft has to try to stay modern and support the 95% of desktops running their older Operating Systems. For example Windows XP is by far their most popular OS. It was released to manufacturers in August of 2001. Still a lot of people running XP today. Show me any Apple/Google software that they still support 11 years later.

If they get this right, it will be awesome to have same core OS for those 4 devices. My team can write software once to go to all 4 devices would save us a lot of time and money. If you have a Xbox, I would definitely recommend one of the surface or a slate and upgrade. the SmartGlass technology is really cool!

BTW - if you can't tell I'm a software development director. I'm in financial services so we support iPhones, Androids, etc. but we are mostly a Microsoft shop with most of the code we write is in C#. We still have a lot of XP users using IE7 as their browser. It sucks to support those old browsers. This move by MSFT is a way they can move to where they want to go and hold the hands and give them a gentle pull into something more modern. This allows software vendors to have a chance to catch up to this technology and build for their modern UI.
