I have always been a fan of synthetic base layers but while I was in Cabelas this summer I found some First Lite tops and bottoms (merino wool) in the bargain bin and picked up a pair. I've never liked wool for anything because it irritates my skin and weighs too much, but after picking them up and putting them down 5 times, I finally decided to buy them.
Flash forward to my recent mountain hunt with temps of -20F at night and up to 60s in the daytime when hunting lower. For 7 days I wore those tops and bottoms and they were warm when it was cold and wicking when it was hot. They also had thumb holes which came in handy because I was always wearing gloves of some type. Along with that, they didnt have the stink that my synthetics do when I sweat too much in them. I think it qualifies as the best purchase I made under $1000 for the entire trip.
I was using the Llano top and the Allegheny bottoms. I actually brought another pair of long underwear with me because I was afraid I would hate the merino after a few days but that extra pair came back still folded. I dont normally rave about a product, but this stuff is just awesome.
