I would stick with either tracking hog- or tracking deer. Not both.

PM K9trainer... I think he knows a thing or two about dogs. I could be wrong though. (:

Why not have your dog track either? I am far from an expert but over the years I have had my old dog track both and I could not see much difference in how she acted. Tracking a pig might be a little more dangerous but a buck can hook a dog too.

Back to the OP. You might want to do a search on this topic. There is a book called "Born to Track" that is helpful. Try to get your dog on as many animals as you can, even if you don't need a dog. Also, you can collect blood and freeze it. Then do mock trails and leave some type of reward at the end, I prefer to leave part of a deer. Go crazy with praise at the end of the trail when your dog completes the task.

I have a bunch of blood in my freezer if you need any. But I am in San Antonio.....probably best to go shoot something .

                Good luck.

I have always used deer blood, but I have read others say that any kind of blood would work.

Once a dog gets on a "Blood" (hog or deer) trail he will stay on that track till it's gone or they find it.
He will smell other scents on the track but will be on Blood not scent, that's the way Skip does, even if he crosses other hog sign or tracks.

Kinda like our Narc dogs, people would put the Marijuana in a towel wrapped in cologne, in a plastic bag in detergent, wrapped in a gasoline rag, stuffed in ground coffee.

Guess what the dog smells. Coffee, gasoline, detergent, cologne, the sweat on the towel and the Marijuana then he alerts !!

                      They are amazing.
