AR's can be hard to field judge.

The deer I see are generally right at ear width. Some of which I'm pretty sure wold score 125+ (good deer for me). I find myself glassing and looking so hard to determine if it's wide enough, I'm not ready if a shot presents it's self. I saw 10 point with a kicker that I think would go 130 but it was just even with it's ears, not outside. I'm pretty sure that it would make 13 though because he was quite a bit bigger deer than average. I'm not arguing against the AR's, just trying to train myself to field judge more quickly. Curious to see if any of you find this to be an issue?

Yep, especially since I hunt public land and the deer hang around for all of 5 secs if you're lucky. I missed my shot on two legal bucks last year trying to tell if legal or not.

It is really hard to judge when you hunt trails. What I do if he is a deer that as soon as you see him you say to yourself that he is a shooter, then he should be legal. If I have to pull out the binos, then he is too close and he will probably be gone by the time I decide.

Agreed but you just have to adopt philosophy that if any doubt u let em walk. Not worth this risk.

Typically my deer ear width = 14"

I've determined that if I need to spend a lot time trying to figure out if the buck is legal he probably isn't.

Like above. If you have to think twice about it,let him walk. He'll be bigger next year.

If possible, already have them judged from trailcam pics before they ever step out.

+1 "outside the ears" is conservative. But be careful.

I don't even look at the ears. I look at the width between the horns. But again, in my line of work, I use a tape measure nearly everyday, so seeing 13 or more isn't that difficult for me. Plus, I measure every deer that comes in and a lot are 14 to 16 inches apart at the ears. One was even 18"

I'm coming out with a new method and new product for AR Counties (not really mod's)...
The method utilizes the product -a dozen or so measurement tapes horizontally on trees where the deer will be for your shots...and works sort of like how convenience stores have them vertically on doors to capture robbers height on camera..

Its an issue that cost me $1600 a couple years ago. I'm much better at judging now!

Actually have one better. Went to the top secret laboratories of Bushnell and we have been working on a new range finder too take all the guess work out of hunter for you. It will range your deer the give you the AR spread and then if you buy the Bowstrider13 plus version it will also give you the total BC score, the weight of the deer and the age. Now the Bowstrider13 version you might think wow that has to cost me over $1000 but no you can have it for only 4 payments of $249.99 plus 69.99S&H. You will ask yourself how did I ever hunt with out one these. You will be the envy of all the other hunters at camp.
