    atv winches(what to buy)

what size winch and brand do you have on your atv.any of them i need to stay away from.im buying a big bear thats weight is 593#

lots of good winches out there these days. Warn is the standard and what I started out with, I went to a Rule 3500 (marine grade) w/the the warn hand controller switch adapted to it. The warn 2500 for ATV's is hard to beat...

I have a "slightly" modified SP700, about 1k lbs wet.

I have the Warn 2500# on my Sportsman 700. I have had to use it 6 or 8 times with no problems and plenty of power. I shopped the less expensive off brands and considered them, but I figured when it would get used, I would more than likely be in a bad place with no back up so why take the chance? I pictured myself 3 miles from the truck, an hour after dark, in the cold cussing myself with an underpowered winch wishing I spent the extra $300.00.

The way a winch is rated is on the last wrap. Which would be where the winch spool is the fullest. Meaning on a 2500lb winch you only get 2500lbs at about 6 ft in front of the ATV winch. You loose about 400lbs per wrap. With 3 wraps out your 2500lb winch is a 1300lb winch and the 600lb machine that’s stuck will need no less then 600lbs of pull to get it to move. I would have to say bigger is better.

I have 2 of the Warn 3000. When I was doing research at the time I was shopping, word was the 2500 series were having issues. Also the 3000 is sealed for better reliability for those that like to get in the water and mud with their ATV's. That has been a couple of years ago so things may have changed by now...

Probably the Warn winches are best, seem to be the most popular. I was about to get a Warn 2500 and got a sales pitch on the Superwinch 2500 and bought one (Cabelas was running a sale on them). Haven't used it enough yet to brag on it but will next Sept. pulling that 300 pounder out of the gulley. Reviews on them are good.
Since 1970, Superwinch winches and hoists have been globally recognized for quality and reliability. Superwinch is the best name in recovery.
