    Question - Reloading Gurus

Why cant i just screw the de-capping pin out far enough on my FL resizing die to knock primer out w/o resizing? I want to get primer out before cleaning brass. Will this not work? If so, what is the point of universal decapping die?

You mean screw the sizing die out and run the decapoing pin in so you only remove the primer without resizing the brass? It will work. Universal decapoing die so you don't have to reset your sizing die all the time when you want to do what you are talking about.

Texag - yes - basically just screw the decapping pin so it sticks out the bottom of the die further than the recommended 3/16 or so.

Are you serious about the resetting thing? people buy the universal decapper just to avoid adjusting the decapping pin? I just ordered the universal lee decapping die, but feel now like it was $10 that should have spent on something else. I decapped a few little bit ago by just raing case up high enough that primer was knocked out but case did not get resized. Was just wondering if there is something i should be aware of by doing this, or we just this lazy that a full length resizing die will do both and we are just too lazy to adjust decapping pin so they made a universal decapping die?

theres gotta be something i'm missing here - just really find it hard to believe that so many folks prefer a universal decapping die when the FL resizer already does it?

You reload much? Once I've got my FL die set, I don't move anything. I'm an accuracy nut and I don't want anything changing once I got it where I want it.

I just tumble, resize and trim if needed. I'll clean primer pockets if need be with a primer pocket uniformer tool.

I use a fl and a neck die its better on your brass I use a redding turret and just change the turrets leave the dies set one there in.

The only/main reason im jacking with this is accuracy - period.. u guys telling me im gonna have to get more presses so i dont have to change sizing die setups in order to keep brass consistent?

I cant see myself trusting the little lock nut thing. If accuracy is really that sensitive to brass formation then i need to learn how to set dies up perfectly the same every time, or get multiple presses and dont touch them. Im fixing to start neck sizing more and see what that does for my groups. Im still not understanding the down side to screwing decapping pin in further to decap before cleaning and resizing? To answer question im just getting into reloading.

Universal decapping die is the way to go.

Lee makes a universal decapping die. I like to decap all my brass and tumble it before I size it.

The only problem with moving the decapping pin in and out is that the ball that resizes the inside of the neck may be centered a little differently each time you move it back and forth. I dont actually see that as a problem because the case centers itself on the ball. There is one actual drawback to it though. Of the case cleaning medias that I have tried, most will sometimes plug up the flash hole and you have to puch it out and Im leary of missing one. Secondly, none of the media I have used will actually clean the pocket so it seems pointless. The only way ive seen to clean the primer pocket is to do it manually with a primer pocket cleaner or something that works like one. I tumble with used primer in the case and then resize/decap etc

Ok im thinking about this and i think i may be starting to understand why u dont wanna jack with the decapping pin/expander ball set up. Is it because if you get a thousandth or two off from where it was before then u might have changed the shoulder angle slightly compared to your other brass due to pressure being applied to neck by expander ball on way up or out of the cartridge? Is my thinking right here or am i overanalyzing this?

Me too. Never had a problem. I clean the primer pocket after resizing on all my cases anyways.

Yeah but if you get a piece of walnut/corn in the flash hole it will get knocked out by your decapping pin when you go to resize the case.
