I used to do it when I was in high school. The bark is softer so you can dig in but it can be loose if not seated right. Only problem I ever had was my uncle used to get mad at me and say I was killing my education but 10-12 yrs later and they aren't dead yet.

I try and climb only pines with my Summit. Oaks are the ones I'm a bit more nervous climbing. They don't bit into a oak as solid as a pine. A few of the guys I hunt with use the very first climbers that came out. They have blades. They also climb pines with no problem and they've been using theirs since they came out.

Pines are all I climb. No problems.
I had good luck climbing a Sweet Gum. Now Oaks, on the other hand, have harder bark and are more dangerous to climb.

One other thing: some of the old man stands have a slicker cable than summit climbers and can slip on you if you don't get the 'bite' set firmly. Most people who use cable climbers and have problems are trying to climb too fast. Take your time and make sure you set the teeth into the tree and put some weight on the platform before you make the next movement and you will be fine on most trees. I love me some pines, sweet gums and elms to climb.
