It's a Buddhist (proper spelling) shrine. It is no different or weirder than a business hanging a cross. The foods are symbolic offerings with no difference from a Christian hanging palm fronds over a cross on Palm Sunday or smearing ash on Ash Wednesday; or the offering of symbolic blood and flesh in church. Buddhism is THE most tolerant philosophy in history and it's the ONLY major philosophy/religion that has NEVER started a war or committed atrocities in the name of their beliefs, in spite of it pre-dating both Christianity and Islam. You will NEVER hear a Buddhist mocking another faith because to do so would be to violate Buddhism's basic tenet of tolerance. Mocking such a peaceful faith is ignorant.
I'm a Christian but I have studied Buddhism extensively. In its pure form, Buddhism is a "philosophy" and not a religion because the Buddhas (yes, there are a number of them) are not 'gods' - they are men who spent their lifetime studying and working to become the best that humans are capable of being and understanding their role in the scope of the universe - its known as "enlightenment." Think of the "goodness" of Jesus (without the connection to the Father) and you have a pretty good idea of what I'm talking about. In fact, many Buddhists (including the Dalai Lama) consider Jesus to be a Buddha. Consider that the Dalai Lama, the spiritual guide of the Tibetan Buddhists, is REVERED by the heads of every major faith and religion on the planet! Also, many Christian churches and Christian leaders have begun to incorporate meditation into their church practices.
I recognize that most of us are Christians and many have very strong beliefs, but there's no reason to mock or denegrate another faith. Especially one as tolerant and compatible with Christianity as Buddhism. Doing so lessens and degrades the GS community; and it's contrary to one of the founding principles of our nation. As far as I know, we're still Texas Bowhunter and not Texas Christian Bowhunter. I wonder how a bowhunter of another faith that was thinking about joining the GS and ran across this thread would feel? Do you think they would feel welcome? I don't. I wonder how it would go over if someone posted a picture of the sacraments and someone making comments about Christians being like "vampires" or cannibals because they represent the blood and flesh of Christ? Just saying. How about giving the same kind of respect to other religions that we expect for our own?
