    Major diff between 25.06 and 7mm-08 ?

Recoil, cost of ammo, etc ? Ballastics look virtually the same.

I'm no help, but I absolutely love my 25-06.

no help here either but i can tell you i love both guns too. I have both and they are both soft recoil, fairly flat and kill white tails.

Perfect guns for my wife and daughters.

You can get heavier bullets for 7mm-08 than you can for 25.06 between that and larger caliber it might be a better choice for bigger animals.

I do know that the .25-06 is a long action cartridge and the 7mm-08 is a short action cartridge. Also, the 7mm-08 comes in a variety of bullet weights, all the way up to 140 grain. The .25-06 goes up to 120 grain. I have a Sendero in .25-06 and I love it. Never shot the 7mm-08, but if I get a short action rifle, I will be getting a .308 or a .243.

Oh, and I believe the ammo is cheaper for a 7mm-08. It is $30 bucks a box for my .25-06, when I buy the cheap ammo and when I buy the expensive Federal premium with a partition or Barnes bullet, I pay around $40 a box.

So ballistic wise they are very close out to 500 with 120gr bullets but heavier than that is where the 7mm pick up where the 25.06 leaves off.

payload is the real differnce. i load my .25-06' in the heaviest bullet made for it @ 120 grains. you could go up in payload weight many grains higher with the .308 but down range trajectory would suffer. both are top notch, factory ammo cost is a wash and available at most retailers. personally i think the 06' is the perfect whitetail cartridge and it does the job flawlessly.

A 25-06 is a standard 30-06 cartridge necked down to .25 caliber. faster/flatter, BUT lighter. It never has been a good long range gun for just that reason... most bench rest shooters have never been satisfied with it because of it's lack of down range accuracy... seems to always be an issue with the light bullets with the l/d ratio giving it a lower ballistics coefficient that causes fliers for no apparent reason from load to load. Good cartridge for white tailed sized animals.

A 7mm-08 is a standard .308 Win/7.62 nato cartridge necked down to 7mm (.284 cal.). It is also smaller lighter/faster than a standard .308, BUT, the big difference is that the .284 bullets generally in the hunting weights between 147 to 164 gr. bullets have a very high ballistics coefficent and perform more efficiently than the .25 caliber bullets.. good choice for elk sized animals and of course white tailed sized animals. Great accuracy at long range, but a little weak on energy for large bodied animals like elk in the 500+ yard ranges... It's essentially a 7mm Mag without the "kick and umpf" of the magnum caliber... If that's what you're looking for, you might consider the 7mmWSM or 270WSM... short action but some umpf... Both these cartridges have superior ballistics to the 7mm-08 or 25-06.

Saltwaterslick covered it pretty well. The 7-08 has a very mild recoil and is a pleasure to shoot! There are also managed recoil factory loads for smaller ladies and kids. The 06 and all the wsm's will have more recoil.

To state the obvious the .25-06 is based on the 30-06 case and the 7mm-08 is based on the .308 case. Some say the bigger cartridge paired with the smaller neck of the .25-06 causes barrel throat erosion to happen faster. I've never shot a 25-06 so I can't comment on if it's true or not. The 7mm-08 will let you shoot a wider variety of bullet weights anywhere from 100gr to 175 gr. Recoil with both calibers and 120gr bullets will almost be almost identical with pressure @ around 50,000 CUP.

I have both and would choose the 25-06 for longer shots. Otherwise, I stick with my 7mm-08.
