In East Texas they bark like crazy at deer and hogs!

That usually the first sign something is moving through the woods.

They bark at everything. They are a good tool use. They let you know that something is moving in the woods.

I like it when they bark, because they are easier to locate and shoot

Barking is an alarm that animals use to say "danger is near" . Basically it's a distress call and used to communicate with other tree rats

No different than your dog barking when a stranger or visitor comes in your yard

When they are more alarmed than this, they start "whistling". Usually when they start whistling, there is a predator nearby, such as a hawk, owl, bobcat, or hunter. Usually not a deer.

I hear the bark and chatter a lot, but it's never produced anything for me except a dillo once.

Was guiding a hunter a couple of years ago. We were set up beneath some pine trees. A squirrel starting barking at us from one of the neighboring trees. Next thing we know, he's bombarding us with pinecones a twigs. He sure didn't like us there!
