I built a platform stand between two pinion pines where I hunt out in New Mexico. The pinion pines are built similar to live oaks. I used an aluminum extension ladder while building the platform then left it (secured it well at top to platform).....and it has worked well and is safe.

This picture I took while building the platform....have since completed the flooring and strung a safety cable around the whole thing (a little higher than waist high) to keep me out of trouble. I use a folding stool and keep a porta-potty handy. Man.....I have spent some quality time up there.

Go with a tripod-no tree needed.
