    Wrought Iron Gate Questions...

Anyone know of a company they'd recommend in the Houston area that does a good job installing these gates across a driveway. Also anyone have recommendations regarding the type of automatic gate opener to be used, which ones are good and which ones to avoid? Thanks for any and all help.

Looking to get something like this.

I've got a guy that does them for us. If you get me the dimensions, I can get you a quote. Where are you located?

well i cant help you on the gate but gate operators i know. From your pic a assume you want a swing gate about 15 to 18 foot long.A post mounted actuator would work fine(USAUTOMATIC,CHAMBERLAIN)if you want to go with a pad mounted operator go with a VIKING or an ELITE.PM me if you have anymore questions.
PS stay away from anything sold at home depot, and just my opinion stay away from eagle and ramset operators.

My driveway is 10ft. wide so I'd probably like a gate about 11 ft. long that will open by remote. Any and all info. you can give on the make and model of gate openers will be appreciated. The company I'm considering hiring (Affordable Automatic Gates) uses one called Strong Arm Automatic Gate Opener, any info. regarding this one? I'm in the process of getting bids and trying to learn as much as possible.

I can't help you on the opener, but can on the gate. Do you have an existing Wrought Iron Fence to attach it to, or what do you plan on attaching it to. I will try to get you a quote this week. How tall do you want it to be? 6ft at the edges where it meets your existing fence, or 8ft?

In my opinion, Apollo gate openers are the best. I looked at all of them before installing an Apollo at the ranch. They aren't the cheapest...I got the soft start/stop model, two keypads, two remotes...by the time I got the pedestals, a receiver, battery, solar charger, etc. it was about $1300 for the parts. A lot of the cheaper openers have "slack" in them where they can be forced open enough for a person to walk right through...can't do that with an Apollo.

Apollo makes a decent opener.Usautomatic makes the patriot and ranger operators which are also really good,(have put about 250 patriots in over the years) .I dont use strong arm so a dont no much about them.here are some points you need to look at thou.what is the operaters warranty apollo and USAutomatics is five years. Is it solar or hard wired.Does it come with a receiver and two remotes(standerd).

Thanks for the info. on openers. I think I'll be going with a solar powered unit cause I don't have a power supply near by.

If it is really "wrought iron" and not fabricated from square tubing, or even if it is fabricated, the absolute best in the business is Patina Metals on Clay Road. They do about all the work in River Oaks and the high dollar areas in Memorial and other areas in Houston. I've known these guys for 30 years, and they have done numerous jobs for me. You can call them at 713 462-6117. Ask for Jeff or Walter and tell them Charlie Cheatom sent you and tell them you're a bow hunter. they're real good guys, but don't get into computers much... they do iron.

I got a bid today for $5406.00. That includes at 11ft. gate, U.S. Automatic Patriot opener and 2 remotes, solar panel and battery, 23ft. of fence, 3ft. walk through gate, decorative circles between the bars, prime, paint, and install. He says that it'll take 3 weeks start to finish. I'm glad he bid the good opener that Green Arrow recommended. I might get me a couple of competitive bids, but does that price sound about right, or am I getting hosed?

If this gate is for you and you want it to last, ask your bidder if they dip their fabrications, since it seems like you are getting a square tubing gate/fence assembly and not real wrought iron. The boys as Patina dip all their panels in a vat that completely coats them inside and out to prevent corrosion from the inside which is how most tubing fences fail. The corrosion after a few years shows up as a blister under the paint. When you scratch it off, you have a hole in your fence/gate panel... dipping prevents this. The other option is to have it hot dipped galvanized... The custom gate/fence business is a business that you can get almost any price range for any given project. I would strongly suggest you visit the facility you plan to use and see how they fabricate their panels before you make a decision to purchase. They all look the same on the outside, but they vary widely in quality and on the inside.

Try Wood' Fencing 832-279-6008 he is south of Houston around Needville. Builds gates and installs them. Might even do the opener for you.
