Wait, wuuuuuut? You mean there's a possibility the guy knew what he was doing after all and there wasn't any risk in ruining the meat?

Maybe it came out of a freezer whole and he was going to the processor...... I never judge anyone and I also don't plan on eating anyone elses deer.

                Just saying.

Me personally they get quartered and then into the cooler.

BS never said he lectured the guy. Just that he wouldn't do it/like it/understand it. Just like the hunter has a right to eat funky meat, BS has a right to think more care should be given...
And isn't wasting meat against the law? How long before a GW could say something? 2hrs/4hrs/6hrs??

What if we use the same processor and they mix your rank, fly ridden meat with my meat that I took the time to take care of?

I also process my own. I'm not the greatest at it but I know maggots haven't been riding on it.

It is a learning process Jacoby. You get more confident the more you go. I still have a ways to go on it but I get better every time. It is just part of the hunting process for me. Kill it, drag it home( quartered on ice), process it and cook it all on your one. That is full circle for me.

Question: When you buy Ribeyes, or T Bone steaks at the grocery store, do you throw them in the back of the pickup and drive around for a few hours before getting home and putting them in the fridge?

I would think not. Therefore, why would you shoot a deer, and then put it in the back of the pickup and drive a few hours home?

Coming through Llano this Sunday, and stopped for some Q at Coopers. As we were hitting the highway I see a PU loaded down with gear, with four deer feet sticking up in the back of the truck. Temps were in the high 70's at the time. This guy was obviously headed home due to the fact that his truck was loaded to the gills with gear. On top of that he had a YETI strapped to a hitch hauler on the back. Now I realize you HAVE to keep the beer cold, but I thought those coolers made ice. Why not take a little time, clean and quarter the deer, and put it in the cooler? Do you ever wonder why people gripe about the taste of deer meat? It's generally because of the care of the meat prior to cooking, not the meat itself.

                        Rant over.
The real question is why would you get Q at Coopers?

I really like Coopers. It's a little pricey, but I like the Q.

Look-do what you want with your deer meat. Leave it in the back of the truck for two days to age it real good if that is what you like. I just get tired of hearing people say that deer meat does not taste good, and the main reason for such is how the meat was handled. I will agree that deer meat probably has a better shelf life than beef due to less fat. With that being said, I see no reason to wait in getting the meat on ice, or in a refrigerated setting, when one is available ie. the $600 YETI cooler strapped to the back of the truck.

Exactly the reason why I won't use a processor that mixes your meat with every other nimrod that comes in. Almost everyone that doesn't like venison can trace it back to someone who didn't take care of their meat. I try to explain all of the time to people that "gamey" isn't the same thing as "partially spoiled."

Preachin' to the choir. One of my pet peeves.

Just set aside a few extra $$$ and get your own processing equipment. I started off with a $99 grinder and my wife's kitchen knives. After I saved all that money the first year self processing I could justify getting better equipment. Now when all my buddies gripe about deer processor prices, I just sit back and grin.
