They are out right now. Killed a 4 footer yesterday. Almost stepped on him before he made a noise.

Lucky he made noise, I've heard that some no longer rattle due to hogs getting the ones that make noise and natural selection/behavior is causing some to no longer rattle. Not sure whether it's true but makes sense.

While it does makes sense, evolution takes a much longer time to occur than 50 years or so. So I think..
