Seen a 270 with a scope, cheaply I'm sure. The price was 329.00$. I believe it was a Remington. Question is would this be a good entry level gun for a 16 year
old boy?
Was probably the 770. I'd say no. "Entry level" isn't how I'd look at a first purchase. Buy the right rifle and it's a lifetime purchase. I'd look at the 700 ADL which is a little more but without scope.

just throwing it out there, i picked up my marlin xs7 in .243 for $300, added a $140 nikon to it and its a tack driver. I love remington model 700's but couldn't spend the money so went with this one and have never looked back.
If you're gonna buy any gun buy a savage! Most accurate out of the box and they offer the accutrigger and accustock, making their rifles a step ahead of any production made firearm!
If you're going the cheap route go get a savage axis. They're under $400 at Cabelas with a scope. It's got a cheap Bushnell on it but is good enough for an entry level rifle and can be replaced with better optics down the road. I have a .308 and it shoots just as good if not better than my 700's. I did a 5 minute trigger job myself (involves cutting a spring) on it and now has a really nice pull and is a tack driver. I bought it used just because it was cheap and figured what the hell why not and to my suprise I love the gun.
thats what i like bout the marlin x series. they have the accutrigger and bolt from a savage. has the barrel nut on the outside like the savage. the new x series is kind of a hybrid of a few makers. i have yet to find a flaw in mine. 100 yrds i'm hiding groups with quarter easy.
