What would do this to my trees

Doing some yard work today and noticed something is damaging some of my trees. Any clues as to what this might be? There are a few ants and grasshoppers on the trees but not swarms of them. It is only happening to the Androscoggins which is like a cottonless cotton wood. The oaks, pine and crape myrtle are fine. Has anyone else had anything like this?

I'd say carpenter ants. I don't think grasshoppers could do that much damage. Something is eating it up though

Carpenter ant are likely but they are not killing the tree. I'm nearly certain they only eat the wood that is already rotting and cause no further damage to the tree. I may be wrong though. Good luck with that.

Thanks, I hope so. Do I need to worry about my house?

look up asian beetle ,if you notice the cuttings are to large for ants. the guilty beetle is 2 and a half inches long, also there is a giant blackand white spotted beetle which loves cottonwood types i will find there names.
