    Blood ?

Te local slaughter house is going to give me 5 gal bucket full of blood to start working with my dog.

What is the best way to preserve it?

Just don't get drunk and spill the whole thing over in your apartment garage, and make it even worse by trying to sweep it out in front of the garage hoping the rain will wash it quickly away... during a drought. Most of my neighbors dont talk to me.

A 5 gal bucket would be nice. I would put the blood in smaller (empty) water bottles and freeze them. I like the water bottles that have the spout that opens and closes. Makes it easy to disperse and wont spill. That way you only need to thaw out what you will use that week. I keep the blood in the refrigerator between training sessions.

I have only had about 4 cups that i could gather up. I have talked to local buchers and meat market, but have not been able to get that much.

Though my 4month old pup can run down a 100 yard line with about 2oz of blood and with several turns.
He is not too good on trails aged over 3 hours yet.

You can put it in ziplock bags and freeze it. Usually I double the bags up. That is what I do with the deer blood I collect.

This works for me too. When you thaw it, the coagulated blood will not always liquefy well, so get some saline solution and add to it. It works great. I use a big ol syringe to put it out.

Note: If you use plain water, use distilled water as it is less likely to add "smells" to the blood than tap water or other bottled drinking water.

I did a blood trailing session with Sika at the LSBA Banquet this summer with my GSPs. They did OK and she encouraged me to practice several more trial runs. A month ago I used a little blood that thawed when I was cutting up some venison in conjunction with a hide I'd frozen from one of the bucks I'd shot. My male did OK and my female did amazingly well (Thaks Sika ). However, it didn't occur to me to try them on an older (like 3hrs) trail. I'll have to do this next time. Thanks.

Great idea on water bottles. I was wondering the same thing about training my dog, Hunter, to give him more discipline in tracking. He gets distracted some time. Need to get him on and keep his focus.
