I am on my third chest freezer (all used craigslist finds) that I use for fermenting my beers. I have a temperature controller hooked up to maintain fermentation temperatures (anywhere from 38° to 70°). My first freezer lasted a few years then died (it was already pretty old). The last one, and my current one both had the same strange issue.
When I bought both, they cooled just fine. Over time, they started only cooling on one side of the freezer (as seen by ice accumulation), and eventually just would cool in one 6" strip across the top of the front side of the freezer.
I've tried unplugging it and letting it sit, then plugging it in without the temperature controller without success. I really would like to avoid having to buy yet another freezer. Can this be fixed? Any ideas what causes this?
