    Surreal Pig Hunt

No moon last night. Got to the farm just E of Elgin where my feeder and tree blind are at 9:50pm; pigs usually come in @ 11 or later. 80 yds out I could see the red led's on the feeder, so I know something is there, but it might be coons.

With a 10-20 SE wind quartering from my rear-right, I circle left, planning to get within 25-30 yds, more or less SWesterly from the feeder. When within 40 yds, I glass the feeder area, and confirm a sounder. Problem: I hear a grunt immediately to my left. Thinking boar - knowing they don't tend to hang with the sounder, but often will be close by.

Now I'm thinking how long will it take me to get my pistol out of its holster, and the safety off. But using my bowlite, I can see a shoat trotting right to left, about 15 yds out. I'm too slow in getting my pin light turned on, and he's gone. But wait! More shoats leaving the feeder and heading my way. Again, too late - they're all in the woods before I can draw down once I've turned the pin light on. Boy, I'd have pork if I were still shooting barebow.

Dadgum! I'm just certain I've screwed the whole thing up. Looking up, there are still two pigs under the feeder - the big gray sow in the pic below, and another one. I manage to get up to about 25 yds when they leave the feeder area, and trot past me, as close as 15 yds. I draw down on the sow, but know it'll be a shot while she's moving. Put the top pin ahead of her shoulder, but it's not enough - the arrow hits her high in the haunches.

With the bowlite, I can follow her to the edge of the pasture where she stops, looking like she might want to go down. I try to get within range again to put another arrow in her, but she heads for the woods.

No way am I going into the woods on a moonless night after a wounded sow, but wanting my arrow back, I do get out there this morning. It's pretty thick back in there, and I know she's dead, but it's likely in the deepest, darkest spot imaginable. So much for that arrow.
