We got home from Callaghan early this morning. I went with my 60 year old father and 12 year old son. I'm fairly new to the site and really new to bowhunting, but I thought I would share my results from this year's shoot-out.
I managed to kill two javis within 5 minutes of each other - shot them both out of the same group. Got the first one and they scattered into the brush, then they came back to the corn on the sendero, so I arrowed another one. It was on the first hour of the first morning. These were my first ever bow kills (Parker TrailBlazer XP 70# 28" DL, 100gr Slick Tricks on GoldTip Hunters - nothing fancy). One went about 20 yards into the thickest dang brush I have ever seen! It seems like every "plant" on the place has some sort of thorn, needle, barb, or sticker! It makes 20yds seems like a mile! The other one ran about 2 yards into the brush and laid down (lucky me).
My son missed three times and was pretty bummed. He said he had a small case of "javelina fever". I was glad to see him so excited about something other than XBox. He managed to bag 2 rabbits, so he wasn't shut-out. He's outside shooting his bow now and asking when we can go again. I think he's hooked.
We did have an instance of hunters removing our flags and setting up over our corn on the second day. When we discussed it with them, they said they didn't see any flags. Hard to believe that all four flags vanished without a trace in overnight. I showed the guy the time and date I marked the spot in my GPS and he basically told me to **** bad. You know how it is when you're with your kids, don't want to set a bad example, etc., so we moved over a half a mile or so to another sendero. Game warden came (drove a half a mile down the walk only sendero at 30mph or so) and basically chewed us out (we got the condescending tone) for harassing another hunter. Told him the story and he said it's a case of he said\they said and repeated that harassment was illegal and how he could arrest us. Sort of put a damper on the fun.
Also managed to call in a bobcat to about 50 yards, which is outside of my comfort zone, but it was very cool.
Anyone else go this year? I honestly don't think I will go back. It's not a bad deal for the price, but Callaghan has a ton of rules in place to protect their property, but none to protect the quality of your hunt. You never know, I might change my mind by next year.
