Yeah, I read about something similar on one of the test forums about the 6.8 on ar15.com. Pretty crazy. In this case the mag got stuck in the lower.

I read that somewhere the Barret 6.8 mags are the best to use. I think they are made of steel.

I would love the .458 SOCOM also but at $50 for a 20 round box or 1,000 round case for $2,500, I will pass for the time being. I will just stick with the 5.56 at about $250-$300 a case.

LOL!! Got be something to do with that BOOM BOOM instead of a BANG BANG!!

And the Colt pin issue differs between the Civilian models (big pin) and Mil spec models. (Small pin).

Tell me more about the pins, please. I am guessing that the different manufacturers tend to use different sized pins, huh? Are there any tricks to know which ones work with which? What can you do if you encounter this problem?

I also like the fact that the cartridge will load into standard 5.56 magazines.

Honestly, I can't think of anything "productive" to do with the .458, but it kinda turns me on a little bit.

There are a ton of different bullet options!
2100 foot pounds (300 grain spitzer at 1850 feet per second)!
          1/2 diameter bullet (well almost)!

          need I say more!

          $1000 for an AR-15
          $500 for a .458 SOCOM
          ....
Shooting a watermelon and watching it disappear .... priceless

That is exactly why I bought my reloading equipment.

I have seen a lot of AR's and have only seen different sized pins on Colts. The othe AR's (DPMS, Bushmaster, Rock River, S&W, etc.) all fit each other's pin size at least on the ones I have seen. YMMV

Back in 1996 every body was producing AR plateforms with small diameter pins to connect the lowers and uppers, then the first assault weapons ban came and changed things a bit.. Colt started making two types All their mil spec and law enforcement rifles still have the small pins and the civilian weapons have a large forward pin to connect the uppers and lowers. Its a Colt thing.....

LOL!! TVC184 beat me to it...

But even if you could cut the price of the .458 in half.... $1,250 for a case? Yikes!!

I wouldn't be doing a lot of plinking with that one.

The brass would be the biggest problem. semiautos are ruff on brass and fling them everywhere. Bullets, powder and primers are not that expensive compared to some off the wall case.

It was Colt's attempt to passify liberals in Congress in the early-90s. They changed the pin sizes (and I think shifted it's location a little) so you can't drop Mil spec full-auto parts in there. They slightly modified the bolt and hammer so it would jam if it went full auto. I have a Colt AR-15 post ban (very accurate). Oh, they also took off the bayonett lug, like that's going to make it a kinder and gentler assault rifle.

I also have a Bushmaster XM15 which is pretty much Mil spec.
