I would spray it with cooking spray or wipe it down with peanut oil. Then I would build a small fire to get it up to temp, and let her run for a while. Cool it down and rub it down again you will be set. Then cover it!!

My pit is homemade so I bought an ATV cover and just cut out a hole for the stack. Works perfect
