    Yotes

I have never done any coyote hunting before. I can hear them out in the woods/pasture in the evening, and my dogs are barking all night. I'm on a good sized piece of land and dont pen or tie my dogs up. (I will while hunting though)
Anyway, I'm wanting to get rid of some of these yotes.

When is the best time to hunt them? Night, morning, midday, evening???

Do I need a blind or anything? My plan is to sit in the back of my truck a few hundred yards from the tree line. Is that the dumbest thing you ever heard or is it ok???

I know I need to get some kind of call, whats the cheapest option that will work?

    Thanks guys.

i woud try early morning, evenings and at night. a good jackrabbit call. ditch the truck as they wont come near it during daylight. they might but i doubt it. if you get good camo you can just sit in the brush and call. redspotlight at night wont spook them. kill a rabbit and tie a string to it and move it around while callin. its old school but it works

If you use a red varmit light at night you can stay in your truck. If you hunt in the evening be as close to invisible as you can be. I like the lohman calls, especially the long range jack rabbit, but everyone has their own favorites. Check out varmital.com there are a lot of good ideas and tips on there. I prob wouldn't use a blind, yotes can be very warry.

Thanks for the info guys, I guess I'll try early morning and late evening. I dont think I want to mess with trying to hold a red light and try to look through a scope at night.

I'll be going to academy and or gander in Bryan tomorrow to pick up a call.

              OK guys,
I went to gander and spent a whopping 8 dollars on a call.
I'll go out in the morning/afternoon and scout out my "killin spot" then get ready for an evening of chaos!!!

The middle of the day can be a great time to call. Nothing like a good dying rabbit call to a hungry coyote fixin to take a nap.

Watch downwind. Just like when rattling a buck, they'll usually come in from downwind to smell what they're hearing before they see it.

Thanks for the thoughts, but dont get too upset if it doesnt work out. I'm going to try my darndest but I have several things working against me.

                        1. Never hunted for yotes before, so I dont really know what I'm doing.

                        2. Bought a call today but dont really know how to use it... What the heck is a dying rabbit supposed to sound like anyway? I do know if I blow it a certian way it kind of sounds like a duck call.

                        3. The wind has been out of the south the last few days. My land is open pasture to the south and woods to the north. Have to hope for a wind change tomorrow.

Thanks to all who wished me luck. I'll try to post some pics tomorrow... hopefully an LDP!!!

You need a trapper's license to trap. If you catch one in a leg hold trap, you shoot it BEFORE you get too close. You need to check the traps daily. If you do everything right and catch a coyote, he'll chew his foot off to get away if you don't get to him soon enough.

A ran a quick Yahoo search for "rabbit in distress mp3" and found this page. Lots of different sounds for calling coyotes, and looks like some good info to get you started hunting coyotes. Listen to them to hear the sounds you need to make with your call.
