    Getting back in the groove

Back in my intro thread I revealed it's been right at twenty years since I really did anything with a bow. The back corner of my yard is an intersection between three fences, with heavy foliage in each neighbor's yards, 15m from my back door so I've been doing a little practicing back there every day.

One of the providers of foliage is a grapefruit tree, and one of the fallen greenies got stuck onto a stick that was then stuck into a hole in my target. Save for the arrow in need of new fletching, they're all mighty close to my mark, with 4 piercing the grapefruit. I won't be happy until they're all in the grapefruit, but I think they're hitting minute-of-dead anyway.

    You're off to a pretty good start......especially after a 20 yr hiatus.

Your'e getting there but just as importantly to remember is how you react to the "fever" once you have the critter in your sights. Practice practice practice...

            Thanks all.

As for the fever, I think I'm more worried about the draw than the shooting part if I get the chance to get an arrow bloody. My infantry SGT days made lining sights up on targets with my adrenaline pumping like crazy pretty much second nature! Of course, that was an M4 (or if I was mounted it was my sweet girl Ma Deuce) and not a bow. Now I've just got to train with this bow to the point where I know a loose arrow is going where I expect it to go.

I upped the draw weight on the bow today, and will keep at it until this target is useless. So far my favorite things are that I don't have to pay a range fee, and the marksmanship fundamentals I drilled into my soldiers' heads still apply.

Every time I get to full draw without the animal alerting I pee in my pants a little.

Haha, that's probably going to be me the first time I draw on an animal.

It's always more fun to shoot at something. I thought that grapefruit was a lime and was looking for the Corona. And, by the way Anthony, there are a lot of Katy guys to shoot with just to get in the groove and to make sure your form is right.

The neighbors have a grapefruit tree, about a third of which hangs over into my yard, full of green grapefruits right now. Not sure when (or if) they'll ripen but last years crop was pretty nice and tasty. A giant, and I mean about 10" diameter, one fell into my yard a few months back and it took me a few days to eat that one. Sweetest grapefruit I've ever had!

I noticed there were a lot of TBH members from Katy, hopefully before too long I get to meet some of them. A lot can be learned from reading, but more can be learned (in my opinion) from doing. Of course, there's a right and a wrong way to just about everything and I'd prefer to do it the right way so having someone who knows what to do correct any mistakes before they become habit would be a good thing in my book.
