Which handgun for Hunting?? Revolver Only

I am looking to get a revolver for hunting next year in South Texas, more or less something I can have with me in the blind on my MLD hunts late in the season.

I have plenty of autoloaders but I would like to add a hunting revolver to the lineup. It will be outfitted with a scope so that is a consideration.

I have looked at the Taurus Tracker and like the vent rib and integrated scope mount option. I have heard the .454 Casull will also shoot .45 LC so that is an option. I have guys will .41 Mag, .44 Mag feeding me info as well.

One quirk that I have is that I do like the looks of the Tracker, I am not really keen on the "hog leg" look of the Rugers and such. I guess the more "western" looking guns do not appeal to me. I like the sleeker lines and would prefer a more modern looking revolver.

What models and caliber do you prefer? It's intended application will be for pigs and deer. Ideally, what is the maximum range I can expect with a setup like this?

    Thanks in Advance,
    Mike

Without a doubt, S&W 460 Magnum. It is probably the most versatile hunting revolver on the market. You cab shoot 45LC, 454 Casull and when you really need to reach out there and touch them at 200 yards if you want then drop in the .460.

I have thought about getting a .460 pistol barrel for my Encore.

If you're not in the mood to drop a grand on a pistol, go with the Ruger Blackhawk. I personally would stay away from double action big bore handguns. I don't think they are as comfortable to shoot with high recoil loads, due to the design of the grip frame. The geometry of a single action grip allows the pistol to roll in your hand upon recoil. As far as caliber, go with .44 mag. It is a great all around caliber, you can shoot .44 special in it to practice, then load it with mags to go after pigs and deer. If you must go with a double action, I would go with a Ruger Redhawk or the Taurus Tracker. I love Smith & Wesson guns, but I do not think that the 629 is as strong as either of the aforementioned weapons. Between the tracker and the redhawk, I'd go with the redhawk. Rugers are brutishly strong weapons, and they are very affordable. There is one for sale in the classifieds right now as a matter of fact...

        TC Encore!

TC Encore. Buy a pistol grip and forend, then you can choose any caliber you want, just about.

I carried one in Nov/Dec for a couple of years, while I was bowhunting (just in case that big boy hung up). I have the all camo turkey gun and I bought the pistol set up for it and a 10" 7mm-08 barrel w/a 4x Scope. I could keep em ALL in a snuff can @ 80 yds but I would imagine the gun's effective range was close to 150 yards. I never shot it that far, but I bet I could have. I had a shoulder holster for it too. I gave $200.00 for the barrel, grip, forend, scope, and a TC shoulder holster.

I finally sold the pistol setup last year and went strictly commando (BOW ONLY).

Very accurate setup and easy to carry. Plus, you can convert it back to a rifle, shotgun, or muzzle loader.

(shameless plug, cause my all camo encore is listed in the classifieds!)
