The 3-9x40 or 50 would work... But thats a vx2...

If you go 3.5-10x40 or 50 you jump up to a vx3...

My choice would be Leupold vx iii or vx3 3.5 or 4.5... Just whichever i could find a slamming deal on! ...

I thought about something like this too. My only red mark was I have more use for higher magnification than lower. I have been called ignorant before lol. Can you tell me what I would gain from lower powers to school me up. Is it just a bigger field of view?

Has anyone tried the new redfields? I heard they were bought out by leupold but don't know if that's true or anything
else about them except they're made in the U.S.

I've always been a Leupold guy but I recently got a Nikon monarch 4-16x40 and I really like it wanted the 50 but gander didn't have it.

Leupold rifleman, good and cheap. Have one on my 308 and it's guilty of many dead critters. Good in low light too. 4x12x40 I think

Yes that is true, Leupold ows redfield now. The revolutions are made in the US but I heard the new revenge series isn't.

I have heard the new redfields are very nice scopes, but I have not used one. Everyone also told me Vortex Vipers were as good as Leupold Vx3's and that is FALSE. they are nice but no vx3

                    This was my first thought.

Yep, larger FOV mostly...also to help control target "dancing" with less than steady rests, and eye relief is less critical at lower magnification....but the whole scope package (2.5-8x36) is trimmer and lighter than even the 3-9x40's some are recommending. And 8x on the top end is more than enough for shots to 300yds. As usual, YMMV. I have to admit I REALLY liked the Nikon 5-20x44 Monarch I had on my last .25-06, but then again I set it up for longer engagement ranges. My old trusty 7mm Mag now wears a Nikon 4-16x42mm w/BDC reticle and target turrets, cause I don't care how much the gun weighs and want the same ability to engage at longer ranges.

That's a true story Jake. What little experience I have with them they're as good or better than anything in their price range. I wouldn't say they'd stand up to a Leupold as far as clarity but they seem to be well built scopes especially for the $

How will that 36 compare to a 50 in low light conditions? Most of the time my scopes are set at 7 or 8 so I wouldn't be against this. The major downside is this will probably be a river bottom gun... Being SS and the weight. It gets dark early in there and I need it to gather light.

I think the quality of the glass would gain you more under those conditions than the size of the objective lens, where I think you hit the point of diminishing returns pretty quickly. Admittedly, I'm no optics expert, so I'd recommend reading up exit pupil sizes and such.

I would get the Zeiss Conquest 3-9 x 40. I think they are still selling for about $400.
