    Alaska hunt advise .. please

How comfortable are you in the wilderness? I would recommend a DIY caribou hunt. Have a transporter drop you off and spend 7 to 10 days. You can go in by float plane or Super Cub with Tundra tires. I've done it twice and both times went in by float plane. If I was to do it again I would go in by Super Cub, there are more choices as to where you can land, and the transporter can drop you in front of the herd. Don't hunt the Mulchatna herd, its population is way down.

Be prepared to strip your gear down to the basics as you will be severly restricted as to weight. Use lightweight gear and be prepared to use freeze dried food to save weight. Be prepared to spend an extra day or two in the bush, the weather in Aaska is fickle and the transporter may not be able to pick you up on the scheduled date. Some transporters offer outfitted camps so you won't have to pack tents and cooking gear.

By law a transporter cannot help you with the hunt but can only transport you to the hunting area. It is a great adventure and I highly recommend you make the trip if you have any interest.

DIY Bou hunt is good. I would suggest a Yukon River Moose hunt or a Kodiak Brown hunt. If you do the Kodiak bear hunt, you can also get deer. Black bear hunts are always fun too. You going bow or rifle? Let me know if you need contacts, I lived there for 22 years. Most of mine are fishing guides, but they know the hunters too. Elkbowhunter lived there a while too, he might have better hunting contacts.

Alaska is serious business especially in certain areas. I would not go by myself. A twisted ankle in the backcountry by yourself could mean serious trouble. I have been to AK 5 times. I had the most fun on an archery black bear hunt over bait.

I do wilderness hunts by myself in the lower 48 but like TransPecos says Alaska by yourself is a taller task. I am not sure if I would want to do that...

Caribou and black bear are probably the best things to do if your unguided. If I ever shoot a moose I am gonna want a whole team of folks to help me with it. They are HUGE.

TransPecos and I have different taste. I have shot both species of bear in Alaska (never done the bait thing) and the hunts didn't seem that challenging. On my bucket list is to hunt rutting bull moose. Also up there are migrating Caribou with a bow.

Whatever you choose, I reccomend going when it is cold enough to stifle the bugs...... I have NEVER seen anything like the mosquitoes, nats, and flies up there in the summer. It starts out as strong annoyance and ends up driving you bat crazy.
