Back Surgery Question - Trying to pick a surgeon in the DFW area

Of the many on the GS that has had the unfortunate need to have some type of back surgery around the Dallas area - Have you had any experiences with a Dr. John Peloza, M.D? He runs the Center For Spine Care (http://www.centerforspinecare.com) and has been named to D Magazine's top doctors list for 9 straight years (for whatever that's worth).

I've been dealing with back issues for years now. (I'm 37.)
Had a partial discectomy 5 years ago by a Dr. Richard Weiner. Since then, my back pain has increased over the years. I had my latest MRI in January and tried the steroid shots earlier this year that provided no relief. I've been going to the Spine Team of Texas for the last couple years, but they just want to prescribe pain meds and I refuse to take them anymore. Of course - I'm trying to go as long as I can without some type of surgery (like a 360 fusion that I was told I needed), but I'm starting to think I need to do this sooner rather than later. (Just trying to get through my elk hunt in October.)

Call the Texas Back Institute office in Denton, TX my Brother was in really bad shape, Dr. Heize operated on him. One of the most knowledgeable people I have ever been around.

My brother is 41 years old now 4-5 years removed from surgery and he is in better shape than I am and Im 28.

If you want more info PM me.

I think you will be very happy going there in the end, since seeing my brother I have sent 2 others there as well and things are going quite well for them too.

Dr. Andrew Dossett, Carrell Clinic on 75 and Walnut Hill did microdiscectomy on me about 3 years ago. No doctor can do miracles but I'm much better after having that done. I was impressed with their professionalism.

Whichever doctor you choose, just get it done and get back to a pain free life. Anything is better than the pure hell that life is with constant back pain. Been there, done that. Actually, twice.

Yes, Dr. Gill has done to procedures on me about 10 years apart and on different parts of my spine. The Discetomy I had done a year ago is not perfect but tons better than before... I'm 56 and started Krav Maga twice a week ( Israeli self defense) and ride 50 to 100 miles a week on a road bike and mountain bike. Guess I'm not doing to bad...

I agree with WCB Dr Gill did a full disc replacement in my neck three years ago c4-c5 the best thing I could have done not to keen on fusion unless that is the only option, I had trouble again this year c5-c6 but choose the injections this time 1 injection so far so good. At least I would go see him for a second opion (sp?) that is how mine started out. he is at UT Southwestern

Surgery doesn't always cure back problems. It really depends on the cause of the pain. A few years ago, I was told only 33% of the surgeries fixed the problem, 33% made no significant improvement, and 33% the surgery made it worse.

I am super impressed with UT Southwestern but I was turned off with Dr Kevin Gill........he was a sanctimonious, narcissist that acted like he was on 10 cups of coffee. I am 60% better using UT Southwestern pain management(Gabapentin) but I cannot do any physical labor anymore.

Will be going in Monday for a second surgical opinion at Texas Back Institute in Rockwall.
