KS hunters a little info please

I am wondering if the best deer are in the Eastern or Western part of the state.

    #2
there seems to be big deer in all parts of the state, most of the films you see on tv are from the westen part, that being said i have hunted the eastern part since 2000.every year there have been 180s-200s killed within a 10 mile radius of our ranch. i have friends that hunt out west and 145 is the biggest buck they have takenin 5 years. some of the ranches you see hunted on tv (like the hashknife) that primos hunts has very limited acces lots of acres and cost 9000.00 with a landowners tag included. plenty of 130-160 deer in our little corner and bigger deer killed every year. wade

South Central up and through the NE usually produces trophy bucks.
They've adjusted the draw quotas this year and tags should be easier to get. The transferable landowners are no longer available. If you have a place to hunt you should feel more comfortable about the draw.
I hunt the extreme SE corner and the 160" animals are around but not at all plentiful as you might be led to believe.
I've got 40 years in up there and the prime areas I indcated earlier are ate up with land already leased by individuals or outfitters. Hunting by landowner permission is to be had with a lot of leg work. The best years in Kansas were from 1988 - 1995. Again, I don't care what you are led to believe by the TV boys.
Watch the KDWP web site for more information and the May deadline for entering the drawing.
Also, public land in Kansas produces some fine animals. North central Oklahoma is way overlooked for bucks that rival any in the nation. Tags are over the counter too.

I will agree. If you go west, it's all open.
If you go N Central, NE, you will find more public land than S Central. I have hunted S Central but want to try N Central to NE. That part is some great country. Rollin hills with creek and river bottoms with crop fields in between.
The draw is May 1st thru the 31st.

I put in for the first time last year. I drew. In the past, I went with the Transfer tags in the past but since they were going to discontinue these, I put in for the draw, thinking I would get a point but drew instead. You have to know which units you want to hunt when you apply. You can hunt up to 2 units.

Any part of the state has the potential for big bucks. Really depends on the individual property and surrounding properties. I hunt 640 acres in SE Kansas in Greenwood Cnty. I have seen some monsters but have yet to connect. The key is finding good property and learning how to hunt it.

Like others have noted above Central to East is probably best for big W.T.

West you will get W.T. and Mulies.

I hunt up in the far north east corner and there are bruts up there. For the most part there are big deer everywhere in Kansas

I live 45 miles south of KC which would be south east ks,realy good hunting butt in the last 5 years there seem to be more hunters now around this area and its geting harder to find a place to hunt . I would go to cenrtral Ks alott of big farms there and the farmers will let you hunt . good luck
