Isn't there some type of bacteria you could put down there that will eat the waste?

I've always used a cup of lime after each use and have never had a smell issue in any of the outhouses we have had. I miss my last one. I ended up selling it on TBH

Look up composting toilets and build one like that. Shouldn't be too hard to do.

Lime and ventilation, as others have already recommended.

All outhouses are illegal in Texas and have been for years, if you have a written lease and have a obey all laws of Texas or do not create a nuisance this could be used to terminate it, what I dOnt understand is why you don't have a legal septic system or treat the land you hunt On with the respect it deserves? At lease hire a portapotty and get it serviced for deer season.

We went to a compost toilet in our outhouse and no more smell issues. I just built a bench with a hole in it and put the toilet seat over a five gallon bucket that sits beneath the hole. Every time you use the toilet, you add a scoop of sawdust. At the end of the weekend I dump the bucket and replace it with a fresh bucket while the old one dries out. We've had as many as eight people using it and I still only have to change the bucket out once a day. It's not as bad a job as it sounds, and it sure beats sitting in a stinky outhouse!

Oh, and I also dump the buckets in a big compost pile and within a year it's just a pile of black soil. As long as you don't have too much liquid waste in your buckets, it really keeps the smell down. On our lease in Graham, when it was just me using the "bathroom", the dung beetles carries off all the waste during the week while we weren't there. At least I hope it was the dung beetles...
