    Transition to management.

Has any one made the transition from employee to manager in the same office? What was some of your struggles? How did your peers react. What was your biggest "HAHA" moment? Thanks for your thoughts.

I went from outside sales to branch manager and the transition was smooth and actually favored by co-workers.

Don't be an a-hole, think about all of those times you said/thought "If I was boss, I would . . . " and think about 2nd and 3rd order effects. In other words, if I put this policy in place, what other policies does it affect--like throwing a rock into a tank--the ripples spread and spread.

And, never let it go to your head that you are the boss--"Because I said so." usually isn't the right answer to a subordinate's question "Why?"

      Good luck---

The hardest part about it is getting the guys in the shop or whatever the environment might be to start looking to you as a leader rather than a co-worker. Actions always speak louder than words and if you're taking charge and always leading from the front they'll follow you. Try not to let the position change go to your head as it very easily can. Listen to what the employees say and process that intel in a way that's both beneficial for the company and the workers.

Always remember that you made it to that position for a reason and that if every one was meant to be a leader then nothing would ever get accomplished. The rest will just come natural.

I went from being an electrician here at the university to being lead electrician, then to tech crafts lead man. Then the promotion to Technical Crafts Supervisor. I am now responsible for the crew I was once, (and still am to a degree), a part of. The transition was mostly a smooth one. There are still days I struggle with putting the postion over the friendship I may have with my guys. Most of the guys on my crew are my friends and sometimes the friendship has to be put aside. Those days can suck.

I have been involved in a development program. I'm preparing myself for the day if it happens.

I have been a boss my whole life and as long as you remember that your employees pay your salary you will be fine.

I went from the warehouse to department manager about 7 years ago. Most of the folks around me didn't have a problem with it. Just be yourself. One thing I struggled with was the new responsibilities that came with the position and when you take things a little more seriously some folks will think you are letting the job go to your head. I had weekly meetings with my department, let them know that I was still the same guy before the promotion and they could vent/share their problems with me just like before. When I transferred to Mississippi I became the manager of the new distribution center that the company opened so I didn't have to worry about what my peers thought. I was able to hire the crew myself and even then as the main facility manager I was sure to let them know I was an easy going guy and they could be themselves around me. I made some good friends over there that I still talk to on a regular basis even tho I'm back home now. I like a peaceful work environment not one where folks feel like they are walking on egg shells when I'm around.

I've been asked to consider the move as well (here in my office). I don't see it as being an issue with my peers...most of them yield to my opinion and mentoring anyway because I'm the highest producer and most tenured. My only problem that I'm having is the change to managment will be a significant pay cut...40-50%. Im in sales with an limitless earning potential.

I did this same exact thing and has gone over great. The sales people know I get what they face everyday and can understand what they are thinking. Plus, at least with my company, we would rather see someone from within get moved to the role then someone from the outside that we dont know.

X2. By far the biggest challenge will be those times when you have to be the "boss" instead of the "friend". If you are going to be successful you will need to learn how to do this tactfully. I think your other challenge will be getting your previous co workers to take you seriously and not continually treat you like just another co worker. This will cause you problems from time to time when you have to be the "boss". But, always respect them and you'll be fine.
