Just bought my first o/u...now I need choke help

I have owned every style of rifle and shotgun but an o/u. Segbert found a deal on a new Weatherby Orion 20ga and I jumped on it. Looking for choke help. Will only be for dove hunting over ponds and small sunflower fields.

    Any thoughts?

Modified on Bottom, Full on top. That's how we have my dad's O\U set up and it seems to work well for us! Occasionally hunt a tank, but mostly fencelines on corn\milo fields!

I carry a wide variety of tubes with me. Usually two of each of skeet, improved cylider, and modified. I start out the season with the skeet tubes. I tighten the chokes as the birds get smarter/faster/further away. Sometimes the same top and bottom, but usually I have a tighter choke in the top hole and I shoot the more open, bottom barrel first.

I prefer one light mod and one improved!

I see most people do like you, shoot bottom barrel more open first. I shoot top barrel more open first, usually improved top, mod bottom. Over tanks though, you may want to shoot skeet, improved

I like the more open chokes myself. Improved cylinder in one and modified in the other.

No need for a tight choke in a dove field...especially over water in my opinion.

I shoot IC on bottom and Light Mod on top. If I feel like I need just a tad more distance for some odd reason, I'll move the Light Mod to the bottom and the Mod to the top. All Brileys and all 20 gauges.

The reason for shooting the bottom barrel first is because it is more in line with the center line of the shotgun. Muzzle lift due to recoil will therefore be less, allowing a faster follow up shot. Theoretically anyway... I don't shoot well enough for it to matter. I've just always done it that way.

Shooting bottom barrel first I assume?

I shoot top barrel first. I use mod in both some time improved modified. I change it up depending on how they are flying.

Yes sir........I was taught that the lower barrel provides for less barrel jump allowing you to get on target quicker with shot #2. Things may have changed but I've been preached that since the early 80s shooting clays with my Dad and his clays club.

I use a full choke on everything I kill with a shotgun.

Ok. It appears to be the consensus. I will swap em and shoot bottom barrel first. Improved then mod
