    What string and why?

I am considering replacing my bow string on my bowtech and I was wondering what string everyone recommends and why? I know there are some stringmakers that sponsor this site and I appreciate that, but I want to make sure I buy the best string.

Is there a string material I should look for or stay away from?

Also, I hear strings being prestretched. If it is prestretched and then sits for a month or so, will it relax?

Would I just buy a Corbin string and then take it to a local shop to have it installed?

I am just a little concerned about putting a new string on my bow. Mine looks and acts fine. It has no fraying, but it is 4 years old. The last time I put a string on my bow, the kid at the bowshop made and installed the string. Once he was done, he could not get it above 65 pounds. I ended up buying another string and paying another shop to fix it.

Bowtech Octane Backbone strings are great. Had Rocky put some on my Mathews (I know, oxymoron... Bowtech/Mathews) and they are some of the best I have had and I've had most. I usually change stringsd/cables yearly...

Most strings are made from the same BCY material, so it really IMO comes down to service and warranty.

Would it be better to buy one from a string manufacturer or have the local shop make you one? The local shop has a lot on their plate where as the string maker only makes strings.

No knowing how much you shoot, 4 years is a long time on a set of strings/cables. There was a post on TBH about a guy who's bow just exploded when a string broke. I had it happen to me about 10 years ago- I can still remember standing there thanking God I wasn't hurt. Then the limb on my PSE developed a crack 6 months later, which I can't say was the result of the string, but I think so.

I can't imagine any bow shop being able to make a pre-stretched string like the specialty string guys- but I could be wrong. I think they have special equipment to pre-stretch the string before it goes on your bow. I'd do business with a TBH sponsor in a heartbeat, I've had good luck on my and my son's bows with Winners Choice BUT I know there other high quality strings on the market.

To answer your question, if you buy the string, you bring it to the bow shop and ask how much they charge to put it on your bow. Some charge, some don't, some won't if you buy a dozen new arrows at the same time. It all depends.

One other thing, after having a bow technician in a local shop adjust my draw length, when he drew my bow back and it exploded, I ONLY let the owners of the shop put my bow in a press.

Korbins. Honest dude with good customer service. Plus he is a site sponsor. Thats beside the point that his strings are second to none.
