I am working with a chocolate lab right now......she is not the easyist I have had for sure. The book Waterdog is good, I read that many years ago.

Best of luck, let me know if you have anything you need chewed up.

Get the book "Water Dog". Makes it simple. Had mine working on whistle and hand signals fairly easy.

I highly recommend these two videos for a beginner trainer. Very easy to follow and very effective. Get both the Basic and Advanced. They are old videos but they are really good. If you really want to get into it start looking for Mike Lardy's stuff.

Looks like they have combined them now.

search some other threads here, this question has been posted several times.

My best experience training our choc lab, I had her retrieving two birds (dummies) at 4 months on command. Start as soon as you get the pup

                    1. Everything is a training opportunity!
                    2. Command before praise...make pup sit before you pet...every time!!!!
                    3. small fetches with toys lots of praise every time!
                    4. Feeding time....make sit and stay before you let it eat AND buy a cheap cap gun and fire it around the pup when it's eating, our dog snores louder during a thunder storm than I do!!! No firework scares either if you do this early
                    5. Give it lots of toys to play with in the house so they won't chew anything you don't want it to.
                    6. I never really go Maxie on the long stay, that is the hardest one to train, but I really didn't follow the books step by step, that may help

I have been watching a couple of training videos and a book. Water dog is the standard. Also, using what a pro trainer is telling me. She will go to him in a week for a month session.

But.......consistency is the key. My yellow is 5 months. I got her at 3 months and I bet I have only missed 3 days not working her at least once a day for 15 minutes. Now does whistle command, water retrieves, sit, stay, ........but she is still a pup and does stupid puppy things.
