discing 5 acres or 50 acres is no problem as long as your disc is sized correctly.

To get a round bail high enough to clear a fence even a 50 hp is going to need water in the rear tires or a heavy implement of some sort on the back.

that 38 should have no problem. i have used a 28 horse 790 jd to move hay around. it will pick them up with a chain on the front end also.

I just bought a 55hp NH Workmaster with FEL. Haven't lifted any round bales with the loader yet, but it'll lift a 1200-1400 lb piece of scrap metal with no problem. I disked 10 acres of food plots last weekend and it did fine, although I only have a six foot disk so it takes a while.

Remember that, even though it can lift and pull with no problem, these newer tractors are substantially lighter and that effects you in good and bad ways. On the pro side, I can easily trailer my 55 hp tractor with my Tundra. However, because they're so light, you should look at getting 4wd. It doesn't keep you from getting stuck but tt really helps get the power to the ground more efficiently.

That light weight also comes into effect when lifting, particularly with the FEL. Mine didn't have a problem with lifting the scrap metal, but I would want to add some weight to the rear if I were really trying to carry anything any distance over rough ground.

If you are just a weekend farmer a 50 horse will probably do the trick. If you are talking a 1000 bales a year I would go bigger.

WOW, these folks want you to get a big tractor. I promise you do not need a 50hp tractor at all for what you want to do. My old John Deere 820 (30hp) moved my round bales of hay for 20 plus years and made its fair share of food plots over the years. a full size (not compact) tractor over 30hp will do everything you need. a 50hp tractor is getting pretty big. Just be sure to get 4x4 and you will be good. I now have a 55hp (engine) New Holland and it will do anything a normal person would ever need it to do, BUT it is a larger tractor that requires a larger trailer and really needs a 3/4 ton truck or bigger to pull it, those 30-40hp tractors are smaller and much easier to move around and will do plenty of work.
