How Hard is it to replace a knife handle you don't like ... I have a Good Axis Antler I would like to use. Can this be done with simple tools in the shop...
It all depends!!!!! It looks like the original haft is put on with epoxy....so it would have to be removed....then drill the new antler and fit it to the guard.....then epoxy the new handle.....not really too hard....
I'm not a "real" knifemaker (those guys are artists!), but I do assemble knives (buy components from Texas Knifemaker Supply and put them together). That is a very user unfriendly handle on your knife. Since it is not a full tang blade, you would need to grind off the existing bone down to the metal. I'm assuming your axis horn is whole - that is, not cut into two halves (known as "scales")? If that is the case, buy yourself a bolster (hilt) and drill out the antler to accept the tang of the knife blade all the way to the bolster. Masking tape everything up and fill the hole in the antler with epoxy. slip the knife tang down into the hole and get everything aligned the way you want it. When it dries, remove masking tape and sand/polish to your liking.
