8 year old playing catcher on Select Team

My son started playing catcher a couple weeks ago. Anyone have an old broken in catchers mitt laying around? I could go buy a new one, but I know how stiff and how long it would take to break it in.

Wish I had my old one to help the little guy out. I was a catcher from little league all the way through high school.

Where is Manvel TX? What else does he need? Depending on the shipping rate, it might not save u much... But, my 11 year old has his old, slightly used gear laying around still. Another option, and it sounds weird...but walmart had mitts this year made by Rawlings, all leather and decent, not great. They are on sale at my local Walmart for 30 bucks. Regularly 50-55.

Manvel is south of Houston. His grandma bought him a really nice set of Rawlings catchers gear at a garage sale a couple months back for $10! I was shocked, it must have been used 1 season max.

I thought about going and buying him a new one, but just concerned that it would take a long time to break in. I can pay for a used one and shipping. Just hoping to find that one that is easy to open and close and fits him.

I was a catcher myself, as was my dad and uncle. Its in the blood I guess. :0)
My favorite mitt as a little league kid was an old one that my dad oiled up and did some restiching on.

If you buy a new one but the cheap Colgate shaving cream on it, stick a ball in it and rubber band around it toehold it closed. Let it sit a day or so then wipe it off. It was the best thing I found that works...

Shaving cream? I hadnt heard of that method. How much does it loosen it up? I went to academy and he really couldnt open and close the mitts much at all.

Coat it in shaving cream. Stick it in the oven on a cookie sheet at 320deg for 10min. Let it cool, give it a 2nd coat and repeat baking. I have used this method for years. Just make sure the glove isn't synthetic. It will melt.

Check with your local Little League. I bet if you went and bought a new one, they'd swap it out for a broken in one.

Shaving cream is the method of choice. Plus, sleeping with it makes it better!!

I've got a couple that I can send your way. They are very well broken in and will buy you time to get him another and start working it in for the spring season.

Drop me a line and I will get them headed your way.
